SPEECH OF HIS EXCELLENCY ROBERT WHITEHEAD,
AMBASSADOR OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO TOGO
AT THE INAUGURATION CEREMONY
OF THE NEW HEALTH CLINIC
AT AGBAVÉ, AGOU PRÉFECTURE
THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 19, 2015
MR. PREFECT OF AGOU
HONORABLE HEALTH OFFICIALS,
TRADITIONAL AND RELIGIOUS LEADERS,
MEMBERS OF THE COMMUNITY OF AGBAVÉ
Good morning. I am honored to represent the people of the United States of America to inaugurate Agbavé’s new health clinic. I am particularly proud to participate in this event, because expanding access to quality health care in Togo is a cause close to my heart and one of our primary objectives as a diplomatic mission.
Ladies and gentlemen, the American people care about the people of Togo. Permit me to offer some examples. Over the last twenty years, the United States has provided funding for close to four hundred development projects in Togo. For example, last year alone, we gave Togo more than seven billion francs cfa in development aid.
Since December, medical experts from our Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, known as the CDC, based in Atlanta, Georgia, have visited Togo and spent many weeks here. Through the World Health Organization, this team of experts has been collaborating with the Ministry of Health to strengthen Togo’s Ebola preparedness in case of an outbreak of the Ebola virus. This collaboration has been so successful the CDC is considering establishing an office in Lomé.
Through our humanitarian assistance programs, the United States government also contributes to the construction of schools and other structures. This Agbavé clinic, which I officially present to you today, was fully financed by the American people at a cost of two hundred forty-two million francs CFA.
Just take a look at this building [behind me] – it is a truly wonderful facility. It is fully equipped with a labor delivery room, a doctor’s office, examination rooms, a consultation room, a pharmacy, a recovery room, a covered bathing area, and a garden for mothers and children. It even has a rain water collection system.
To the entire Agou prefecture community that made this clinic a reality, I offer my sincere congratulations. And thank you to the prefet, as well as traditional and religious leaders, for your support. We may have provided the funds, but it was your collective will that built this clinic. Congratulations also go to CNAF f), the company that constructed the building before you. To all of you, I say congratulations on a job well done.
In closing, I wish to thank you for inviting me to share your joy at the inauguration of the Agbavé Health Clinic. It will serve to benefit the health and welfare of your community for many years to come.
