Ladies and Gentlemen

Good morning. It’s an honor and a pleasure for me to join you this morning for the inauguration of the new AWEP Foodies boutique.

This ceremony marks an important milestone for AWEP Togo, and I think this is an appropriate moment to take stock of how much the ladies of AWEP Togo have accomplished.

One year ago there was no such thing as AWEP Togo. There was only seven Togolese businesswomen who participated in the AWEP Program. AWEP is a trade and investment initiative started by the U.S. Department of State that sends prominent female entrepreneurs from across sub-Saharan Africa to the U.S. for professional networking activities and business development training.

One year ago, the seven women who participated in this program decided to organize themselves and invite other Togolese businesswomen to form the AWEP Togo chapter.

After much hard work, the chapter was officially recognized by the government. In February, AWEP Togo was officially launched. As part of the launch, the ladies organized a two-day trade fair and a grand fashion show.

The next step was the the AWEP En Route campaign. As part of this campaign, over the past few months, the ladies of AWEP Togo have organized training sessions across the country, to encourage entrepreneurship and to promote greater economic cooperation with the U.S.

AWEP Togo has also been working vert closely with the organizing committee for the AGOA Forum, which will take place in just a few weeks in Lome.
