On May 4, the jury of the first edition of the “Lauriers du Journalisme d’Impact” awarded prizes to fifteen journalists in the “Print and Online Press”, “Radio” and “Television and Web TV” categories at a gala evening in Lomé. Representatives of the organizing institutions (United States, European Union, France, Germany, and the ISICA journalism school), representatives of the government, international organizations, press organizations, former journalists and hundred candidate reporters took part in the event.

In each category, the jury awarded a certificate of encouragement to the fifth and fourth-place winners, professional video and audio devices to the third and second-place winners, and the first-place winner of each category received an airline ticket for a professional trip to either the United States, France or Germany. The top fifteen competitors received a set of professional books to enhance their journalism practice, in addition to certificates. The jury of 10 personalities selected the best productions from among a total of 129 submitted and took into account various criteria among which the uniqueness of the subject, the potential impact on the target population, originality, syntax or diction, technical editing, illustration, mastery of the chosen genre, quality of the sources used, etc.

The “Lauriers du Jounralisme d’Impact” competition was launched in January 2018 as an unprecedented collaboration between the different sponsoring embassies and the journalism school ISICA, in order to motivate and reward journalists who practice ethical, objective, thoroughly researched and sourced reporting. The expectation is that the competition will become an annual event, and will showcase the best of Togolese journalism each year.
