In 2016, the United States provided nearly $13.5 million of development aid to Togo, primarily in the health, security, and education sectors. The State Department promotes democracy, human rights, economic development and regional stability through programs like ACOTA and the Ambassador’s Special Self Help Program. The Department of Defense (DOD) manages a successful HIV/AIDS prevention program and funds schools, clinics, and other civil engineering projects through its Humanitarian Assistance Program, while USAID’s West Africa Regional Mission, based in Accra, supports large-scale health assistance through regional programs. Together, the State Department, DOD, USAID, and the Peace Corps provide nearly all U.S. development assistance to Togo.
