Presidential Elections in Togo

Lomé, February 26, 2020—The United States congratulates the people of Togo on their peaceful elections. We encourage the Independent National Election Commission (CENI) to work constructively with all sides to address any claims of election day irregularities. A step the government of Togo could take to increase transparency is to release results by each polling booth to increase confidence in the results.

The United States remains concerned about the limited observation efforts, including the CENI’s disappointing decision to revoke credentials from a U.S.-financed, neutral civil society organization to observe the electoral process. Election observation and active civil society participation bring credibility, transparency, and integrity to the electoral process. Not permitting their full participation was a missed opportunity for the government and people of Togo.

The United States will continue to work with the government and the people of Togo to promote shared values of health, security, education, and economic growth while strengthening democratic institutions.
