Press reports indicate that violent demonstrations in Mango on Thursday, November 26, and clashes between police and civilians, resulted in the death of a security official. The Government of Togo is reportedly sending additional security forces to the area, and further demonstrations may continue to occur. The U.S. Embassy is restricting travel of official personnel to or transiting through Mango until further notice.
Additionally, demonstrations are scheduled in Lome for Saturday, November 28, and spontaneous unscheduled protests are possible in Lome and other parts of the country. Even demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence. You should avoid areas of demonstrations, and exercise caution if in the vicinity of any large gatherings, protests, or demonstrations.
Review your personal security plans; remain aware of your surroundings, including local events; and monitor local news stations for updates. Maintain a high level of vigilance and take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security.
