As part of the celebration of World Oceans Day, the Public Affairs Section teamed up with the Embassy’s Green Team and the Togo Fulbright Alumni Association (TFAA) to hold a beach cleaning on one of Lomé’s notoriously dirty public beaches. Our joint outreach mobilized over 100 “cleaners” – among whom were Embassy employees, students of the University of Lomé, members of TFAA, the local NGO Science and Technology for Sustainable Development in Africa (STADD), and other volunteers. In all, we cleaned about 0.5 square kilometer of the former “Hôtel de la Paix” beach. This activity caught the attention of the people living in the neighborhood and made them aware of the need to protect the beaches in order to protect the oceans. But It was first meant to remind public authorities, NGOs, associations and the communities of the importance of oceans in our lives and the impact of human actions on them.
