Chargée d’affaires Dana Banks gave completion certificates to sixty young Togolese activists on January 20 at the U.S. Embassy. Those young activists from Lome and Maritime Region took part in the first of two six-week “civil society certification” training course aiming at encouraging participants to feel empowered and consider the myriad ways that individual contributions support broader national efforts to develop civil society.

The Chargé congratulated the participants and emphasized that “every citizen in a democracy has the right, and the obligation, to join with other citizens to bring positive change to their community, to their city, to their nation”.

The program’s objective is to strengthen civil societies and democracy as a critical part of U.S. foreign policy through providing universal rights and opportunity for progress.
